Ornament Carving

Ornament carving requires very good knowledge of the carving art. Here, very precise work, space and patience are required. Ornaments are usually elements that can also cover large areas.

Ornaments differ from pictures and sculptures in that they are usually abstract and repeating patterns. They are not only used in wood carving but can also be cast, printed, embossed or bent.

Ornaments can consist of tendrils, leaves, flowers, geometric or flowing fantasy patterns. They are found in sacred, historic and other buildings.

Ornaments in Wood Carving

In wood carving, ornaments are used on furniture, door panels, wooden ceilings or signs. In pierced work, the background is completely sawed or carved out — creating a kind of latticework. The wood for this should be knot-free and preferably hard and fine-grained.
