My Story

My name is Herbert Mitterlehner. I was born in 1962 in Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, and grew up in Bad Zell, a small village in the Mühlviertel region.

My path to wood carving was partly a happy coincidence, and partly the environment in which I grew up, which predestined me for wood carving from an early age. The Mühlviertel is a region with a long and vibrant tradition of wood carving.

In 1980, my father enrolled in a carving course — but had to drop out due to lack of time. I stepped in so nothing would be lost, and attended the final lessons. And then I remained faithful to this hobby, which I quickly grew to love, right up to the present day.

As early as 1982 I chose my artist name Kerber, derived simply from the German word for chip carving (Kerbschnitzen). The name Kerber Carving Art came later with the arrival of the digital age. My website launched on 2 September 2015.

My personal career has been quite colourful: floorer, interior decorator, soldier, long-distance driver, salesman, entrepreneur, mechanic, caretaker. Only one thing remained constant: my hobby, wood carving, which I have been faithful to from the very beginning.
